Description
German springerle / specula cookie mold made from wax. It depicts man in pantaloons carrying a flag. Etched into wax on side is "1691 HE". At the man's feet, HE is repeated. I thought perhaps this was one of the French Henri kings. However, I'm not finding a European ruler's name starting with H who was in power in 1691. Know who this is? Please message me!The backside has a rope hanger embedded in the wax. It has 4 felt pads to keep the mold from rubbing against the wall.
Last two photos show the reversed image to help you see how cookies would appear.
As to age, I don't know what to tell you. There are reproductions of these wax molds. I spent quite a bit of time comparing this mold to others online, trying to identify features of antique versus new molds. This came from the estate of a Dallas antique dealer. Based on comparables, I believe this is from the mid-1800's, not 1691. Again, please help educate me if you know something this mold's age. Price has been set very low compared to similar antique pieces.
Dimensions: 9" Tall x 3.5" Wide x 1" Deep
Condition: Very good giftable condition. Signs of use commiserate with age. Because of softness, nicks & indentations in the wax. Image retains shape and crispness of detail.
About Springerle: Springerle are German anise-flavored cookies that go back at least 700 years in their rich tradition as special gifts during the holidays and other celebrations. Delicately crispy-crunchy and a slightly chewy center, they’re made with simple ingredients and are easy to make but absolutely require that you follow some key steps to achieving the right look, texture and flavor. This authentic Springerle recipe goes back to the Swabia region of Germany where these famous cookies originated.
Historically made for religious holidays and other special occasions, today they are most commonly made during the Christmas season and for New Year’s though Springerle with flowers, landscapes and other everyday designs remain popular throughout the year. The name “Springerle” translates from German as “little jumpers” because of their behavior of rising or “jumping up” while they’re baking.
The hallmark of Springerle lies in the beauty of their presentation created by special molds used to emboss designs on their surface. Springerle were traditionally made as gifts, as charms for happiness, to give to friends and loved ones on special occasions such as births, weddings, betrothals, during the Christmas season and on New Year’s.
