  • Condition: This is an amazing find from Rome, Italy and what we are estimating the 18th century. Excellent condition for age. Repousse detail on this brass or metal alloy brooch is exquisite. Natural patina even on piece. Pin back looks to have been replaced or added and is not original. Not sure if this was always a brooch. Might have been something else originally.     This item is a beautiful antique brooch featuring the statue of
    Laocoön
    and His Sons, also known as
    Laocoön
    Group.
    The statue of
    Laocoön and His Sons
    , also called the
    Laocoön Group
    (Italian:
    Gruppo del Laocoonte
    ), has been one of the most famous ancient sculptures ever since it was excavated in Rome in 1506 and placed on public display in the Vatican,
    where it remains.
    It is very likely the same statue praised in the highest terms by the main Roman writer on art, Pliny the Elder.
    The figures are near life-size and the group is a little over 2 m (6 ft 7 in) in height, showing the Trojan priest
    Laocoön
    and his sons Antiphantes and Thymbraeus being attacked by sea serpents.
    This oval brooch measures 2-1/2" tall x 2-1/4" wide.  The weight of this item on a jewelry scale is 18.3 grams.
