Description
This bar brooch is an exquisite and crisp example of late-Victorian jewellery. The design is an Etruscan Revival style. It is beautifully engraved and brimming with texture. Signed 'AS' on the back. The metal shows wear, scratches and signs of oxidation, which is consistent with an age.  The brooch has period correct tube hinge and C - clasp closure with pin back extending beyond the body of the brooch by 2 mm.
Victorian bar brooches worn throughout the entire Victoria era, they became very popular during the Late or Aesthetic era and were a perfect compliment to the high necked and collared dresses of that era.
In the second half of the 19th century, archaeologists were capturing the imagination of the Victorian public with their breath-taking excavations of Etruscan tombs in Italy. The discovery of lush Etruscan tombs inspired jewellers to re-create some of the amazing treasures that these ancient people took along with them into the afterlife.
