Description

Louisiana poster with Arthur Jafa's work
LeRage
(2017).
A work in which Arthur Jafa has reproduced the iconic Marvel character, HULK, in human size.
But in Jafa's version, the characteristic fluorescent green color has been replaced by a dark grayscale.
The change is a strong commentary on gender, blackness and cultural perception - and is a kind of self-portrait of Arthur Jafa.
American Arthur Jafa (b. 1960) is one of the most important voices in contemporary art.
Jafa's moving and biting critical works depict the mismatch between the success of black American culture and the low social status of black Americans.
Arthur Jafa actually started his career as a film photographer.
He has worked with big names like Spike Lee and Stanley Kubrick.
In recent years, he has made music videos in collaboration with a number of prominent American musicians.
Among others Jay-Z, Solange Knowles and most recently Kanye West on the track Wash Us in the Blood (2020).
For his artistic work, he was honored in 2019 with the art world's most prestigious award, a Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale.
