    Description

Gold crowned cipher of Nicholas II at top, crowned Arms of the Don region against turquoise field at center, red and black enameled ribbon below with dates "1570 -1870", white and red enameled Order of St, George below. Measurements of the badge 40 x 35 mm.
The ribbon is color of Romanov Czar Family flag. Russian Cossacks formation were especially loved by the Russian Czars.
The medal was remade from the original Russian Imperial Army Don Cossack Regimental badge. On the badge (with some strong glue or resin) on the oval of the badge, an additional part was glued in the form of a Russian Czar crown and a image of the ribbon, on which some jewelry stones were superimposed ( as pictured). The badge itself (pendant on Russian Romanov's Czar Family ribbon) is an original. The badge has a hallmark of 84 Russian silver standard and a maker mark cyrillic letters BA. The badge had a screw, but later the screw was cut off, probably when the badge was remade to be worn as a medal. The rest of the screw is visible.....
Most likely, this medal was worn by some Cossack who served in one of the Russian Cossack regiments of the German army during ww2. He could not wear the Russian imperial regimental badge on his uniform, so he converted it into a medal for wearing with other awards (for example Eastern Peoples Medals,Russian Winter Campaign 1942-43 medal or German Iron cross).
