You are bidding on an original and extremely rare badge for German mini submarines. From the middle of 1943, the Allies were able to break the success of the German submarines by decoding the Enigma machine and by equipping warships with radar. When the Allied invasion was expected for 1944, the German Navy, in desperation, looked for a cheap solution to sink as many Allied ships as possible with little effort. Mini submarines were built, with a crew of 1 or 2, and carrying up to 2 torpedoes. These submarines were technically very simple and it was expected that the crew would mostly not survive the mission. Examples of this class are the small submarines seal and beaver.
The probationary and combat badges for small ordnance were donated on November 30, 1944 by the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy Karl Dönitz. They consisted of one probation level and seven combat levels and could be awarded to members of the small combat units of the Navy in recognition of the dashing, successfully executed attacks by the small combat units. These small combat units were set up in April 1944 under the command of Rear Admiral Hellmuth Heye and were used to test and use new weapon technologies, with the help of which an effective fight against sea targets, mostly suicide missions, should be possible.
Against in the end of 1944 there were some operations of the small submarines. However, due to technical difficulties and the rapid success of the Allies, there were only individual successes.
The badge shows a silver-plated fish, the beautiful patina was left on the medal. The company stamp of the manufacturer Juncker & Berlin on the back.
