    Description

RAINBOW IRIS CRYSTAL VICTORIAN MOP BAR PIN, COLORADO SOUVENIR
This pin brooch dates to early days of the 20th Century.
There are two nicely cut ‘iris’ glass/crystal, also called ‘rainbow’ stones.
The bar pin is covered with mother of pearl.
There are gold filled flourishes surrounding the stone mounted on the bar and a dangling ‘plaque’ has “Colorado” engraved in it.
    C clasp in back.
A really nice little souvenir from about 100 years ago!
Rainbow or also called iris glass has an interesting history.
It was made in Bohemia and Germany, to resemble the quartz found in the Rhine River area and which gave out little rainbow reflections.
These were thus, the original ‘rhine stones’, and the color is within the glass, not applied on top.
    Pretty cool!
When they figured out how to make this glass, it was very popular and showed up as focal points in antique costume jewelry of that era.
Bar pin measures 2 inches long, 5/16 inch wide and overall it is 1 1/4 inches long.
