Description
This is an all original WWII German officer's greatcoat. I'm not an expert on WWII German uniforms, but I believe that this is a Major's who served in the veterinary corps. Please your sources to verify this. The coat is in good overall condition, with three detractors. The major detractor is an "L" shaped tear in the right sleeve as shown in the photos. This coat is collectable to warrant it being taken to a "re-weaver" if there is one in your area. They are able to take small fibers from the original coat and microscopically re-weave the material to make the tear literally disappear. I had this procedure done to my Dad's WWII Dress Blues to repair a small hole. You cannot find it even knowing where it once was. The other detractors are two small holes in the green velvet collar as shown in the photos. There is an original War service cross 2nd class still in the button hole. This coat displays well despite the mentioned defects and it is rather unusual to find anything from a major in the veterinary corps as opposed to the many infantry, artillery, etc. items.A viewer contacted me with the following information:
You are correct in that the branch is Veterinarian and the rank for a Major would be Stabsveterinar (Staff Veterinarian). The ribbon is for a War Service Cross II Class. This would be appropriate for a Veterinarian vs. the Iron Cross which was more for fighting troops. The colors on the Iron Cross ribbon are reversed meaning black outer bands and red center band. He also informed me that the owner's name would be on a tag inside the inner pocket. Sure enough there is was, I added a photo of it. This gentleman says that he will try to research the owner for me. Any information will be passed on to the new owner if Ebay won't let me add it later.
