    Description

This is an extremely fine Spanish Civil War/World War II Military Merit Cross in excellent condition. It is constructed with red and white enamel on a gilt alloy background. The upper arm is surmounted by a Spanish royal crown and has a tablet to engrave the date of bestowal. The round central shield of the obverse bears the coat of arms of Castile, León, Aragon, Navarre and Granada. In the middle is a blue oval shield of the House of Bourbon-Anjou. The arms of the cross are with thick, translucent red enamel beneath which can be seen a radiated pattern. The central disk on the reverse features the golden script letters ‘MM’ for Mérito Militar - Military Merit - on a white enamel background. The cross is suspended from the original red ribbon with white central stripe and mounted on an open face brass broach that retains the functional swing pin and open catch. A fine-looking example as awarded to Spanish Civil War veterans and their allies for gallantry during the 1936-1939 Spanish Civil War.
